How to Make Your Daily Commute More Interesting

Commuting is often the most frustrating part of the day, representing a significant chunk of time given to the simple act of getting to and from work. Even though the number of commuters is currently on the decline, thanks to a rise in hybrid working agreements, commutes are still an important thing to navigate – but how can you make your commute work for you?

Public Transport

Public transport has been a popular, and necessary, mode of transport for many commuters for generations. But lately, commuter numbers on public transport have been on the rise – in part due to the rising costs associated with running a car, and in part due to concerns over the ecological impacts of driving.

For whichever reason, you may find yourself taking the bus or train to work as opposed to a car for the first time in some time – in which case, you may be looking for ways to make your idle time on the move more interesting and enjoyable. One of the advantages public transport has over private transport is that you are not required to pay close attention to your travel. But this can also be a downside, if you’re not prepared to fill that time!

One of the more useful ways you can fill your travel time is through tending to your morning needs – in particular, your breakfast, and perhaps a dose of morning caffeine. Breakfast bars are a compact, no-fuss option for a quick filling en-route snack, and a pre-made flask of coffee can help you feel much readier by the time you get to the office.

Travel time on a train or bus is also the perfect time to engage in a craft or hobby of yours, allowing you to enrich your mind before you start your work day. Portable crafts like knitting or needlepoint are perfect for indulging on the move, but for less commuter-friendly hobbies you could use your time for research purposes.

By Car

Of course, public transport is not the perfect option for everyone, and a car may remain the only viable option for certain morning commutes. Indeed, some may find themselves moving to a role that requires a driving commute, putting them behind the wheel as opposed to in a train carriage. What are some stimulating options for the active driver, whose attention must remain with the road?

For driving commutes, podcasts and playlists are your new best friend. Before you drive, you can compile a number of shows or songs you’ve been meaning to catch up on, and use your journey to do just that.

It is important to remember that recent changes to driving legislation have rendered certain actions behind the wheel illegal – including the handling or navigation of your phone while your engine is running. As such, you should set everything up beforehand for hands-free navigation.
