Sunday Roast Diaries: The Market Tavern, Alnwick

I’m back for another installment of The Sunday Roast Diaries, this time we’re heading up to Northumberland. A few weeks ago, Stefan took me on a surprise trip, it was my Christmas present and I had no idea where we were going. After a few clues, I did suss out that it was most likely somewhere North. We stayed at the Blossom Plantation Pods which is about 10 minutes North of Alnwick and on the way stopped off in the lovely little market town for a Sunday Roast. Usually, I pick out our Sunday Roast places so Stefan had a lot to live up to on this one and booked a place called The Market Tavern.

The Market Tavern is located on 7 Finkle Street, just off the main drag of the town square. It’s branded as a Steakhouse & Lodge but once inside it has a very traditional pub interior. We were eating around 4pm so it’s worth noting that they so serve Sunday Roasts later on in the day too. We were seated in the main pub area but I believe there was another dining room up a couple of steps. It was such a lovely cosy place. Even though it was a pub setting, it was table service for ordering food and drinks.

As I mentioned, The Market Tavern is branded a steakhouse so we knew the meat here would be pretty amazing. Although I was tempted by their steak plates, we had to they their Sunday Roast. I believe the menu is quite limited for a Sunday as looking online their regular menu is huge! It’s also worth mentioning they have quite the extensive drinks menu too with plenty of different cocktails and gins, which obviously made me very happy.

So we both went for the Sunday Roast and both got beef. Stefan opted for Brisket of Beef with an extra meat of Ham and I got the Sirloin of Beef. The Sunday Roasts were super affordable too, I believe the standard roast was £10.95 and Stefan paid extra for the extra meat and my Sirloin was a couple of pounds extra. Compared to most of the places we have been for Sunday Roast Diaries, this place has been far the cheapest.

The Roasts came served with all the veg on the plate and a dish with cauliflower cheese came separately. They come with red and green cabbage, mash, swede and roasties. I’ve got to say that the roasties were on an elite level. We were both very impressed with the meat and Stefan hasn’t stopped raving about how good his brisket was. No complaints about the Yorkshire Pudding, it was bang on for us.

I really enjoyed our stop off here and would recommend visiting for an affordable yet delicious meal with lovely staff and a great environment. If you’re visiting Alnwick Castle or the Gardens, it’s the in perfect location. If you want to see a little snippet of our trip then check out my Instagram Reel here. We also ate at a place called The Dirty Bottles which was also amazing with delicious food! Alnwick is such a gorgeous place, we’re hopefully going back in June!

Have you ever visited Alnwick before? Where should I go next for the Sunday Roast Diaries?

XOXO
