Tips for Travelling with Pets

We all love going on holidays but sometimes (especially travelling within your own country) you might want to bring your pets along with you. Travelling can be stressful as it is but bringing your furry friends along doesn’t have to add another layer of stress. I’ve put together a few of my top tips for travelling with pets and making it as calm and stress-free as possible.

Tips for Travelling with Pets

Keep pets in a crate/carrier

The safest place for your pets to be whilst travelling in a car is in either a crate (for a dog) or a carrier (for a cat). You might want to let them roam about but keeping them to their own space is not only really safe but will create their own area of security. If your dog is a nervous traveller, it might be worth looking at dog calming supplements.

Plenty of stop offs

This is one is pretty obvious but it’s so important you plan lot’s of stop off’s on your road trip for your pets. This way they can stop for a toilet break, get some fresh air and even stretch their legs a little bit. I’d certainly plan a stop off around every hour mark, it’s best to do them more frequently than you think to be on the safe side. It also goes without saying, if you are taking a break at a service station, please do not leave your pets alone in the car.

Hydration

Keep your pets hydrated with lots of water. Let them have regular access to water whether thats within their crate or carrier or giving them water yourself. It can get quite hot in a car so this will also help with this. As I said, you need to plan regular stop offs so this could be when you offer them more water.

Pet-Friendly Accommodation

Not forgetting about when you get to your holiday destination, you need to make sure that your accommodation is pet friendly. These days, there is quite a lot of options no matter where you are travelling to. When booking it’s usually marked clearly whether pets are accepted but some properties do accept pets by arrangement so you may need to contact before booking. Make sure you’ve brought some of your pets favourite toys so when you get to your accommodation, it’ll be comfortable home away from home for them.

Do you have any tips for travelling with pets? Would you do it?
