Building the Best Skincare Routine

I seem to be doing quite a lot of skincare content at the moment. To tell you the truth, with lockdown I’ve not been wearing THAT much make-up and it’s been a great opportunity to look after my skin. It’s all down to really nailing that skincare routine, finding the best products and sticking to it. I won’t lie, in the past, I’ve been quite wishy-washy with routines. Never really been consistent with a  routine but I believe skin consistency is key. I’m no expert but I’ve teamed up with Cetaphil who have a large range of gentle skincare products to share my thoughts on building the best skincare routine.

I have a morning and evening skincare routine which are actually different but I do use some of the same products. It’s important to find the right products for your skin type. This is based on whether you’ve got dry, oily, combination skin or even just sensitive or acne-prone skin. It’s best to choose tailored products which will really benefit your skin type and target any issues you have.

Morning Skincare Routine
  • Cleanser
  • Toner
  • Hydration Mist
  • Eye Cream
  • Face Oil or Serum
  • Moisturiser
  • SPF

Cleansing and applying SPF has certainly got to be the two most important steps of the Morning Skincare Routine. I don’t think until the last year or so, I even realised how important cleansing was. I’ve now got seven flannels which I use once a day then wash to cleanse in my routines. I’ve spoken a lot about cleansing on my blog recently and I think I’ll be doing a few more posts as I’ve really been trying to hunt down the best on the market.

Once you’ve cleansed your face, it’s time for the toner step which I tend to use an exfoliating tonic with an acid such as hyaluronic and just use a cotton pad across my face avoiding the eyes. Then I use a hydration mist, nothing fancy just a standard rosewater one to add a little more hydration to the routine before going in with eye cream, usually a vitamin C serum or oil and then a moisturiser. As I said before, the SPF part is super important because even if it’s not sunny outside, your skin needs protecting!

evening skincare routine
  • Micellar Water/Make-up Remover
  • Cleansing Balm
  • Cleansing Gel (Double Cleanse)
  • Toner
  • Serum
  • Eye Cream
  • Treatments
  • Moisturiser/Night Cream
  • Face Oil

Onto the evening routine which is all about the cleansing. I’d highly recommend double cleansing, especially if you have a face full of make-up. You only really need to do two out of the three first steps, although I’ve been known to do all three especially just using make-up remover or micellar on heavy eye make-up.  When it comes to cleansing on an evening, I usually go in with a Cleansing Balm first and that gets rid of most of the muck and grime on my face from the day before going in with a Cleansing Gel which will leave my skin feeling silky smooth. I used to HATE cleansing but now I fully understand how important it is, I’m kinda obsessed.

The next few steps for me are similar to the morning routine using some of the same products such as the toner, eye cream and most of the time I use the same moisturiser. On an evening, I do use a different serum that I’ve had prescribed specifically to target my skin’s texture and redness but otherwise, I’d recommend using a serum with hyaluronic acid factors.

Face Oils are always to be applied last, I actually found out this is because nothing can get between the oil layer so this is why it should be the last step. I still sometimes forget to put on a face oil but it’s still an important step as the oils can help boost the efficiency of the whole routine!

I hope this post has helped anyone struggling with what to use as part of your skincare routine. It’s also so confusing to remember the order so hopefully, this will be good to refer to! I also need to mention Caroline Hirons as her Skincare book is the absolute bible and so informative!

Do you have an extensive Skincare Routine?

XOXO
