I’m back with another Sunday Roast Diaries blogpost and this time we visited a restaurant in Manchester. After doing a little bit of research with my friend who lives in Manchester and of course, Instagram – we came across a place called The Mews. This place was located on Deansgate Mews and their Sunday Roasts looked stunning on their social media. Obviously for research purposes, we had to get booked in and see if it tasted as good as it looked! Deansgate Mews is set behind Deansgate and as I’m not a local, I did find it quite had to find!
The Mews Bar & Charcuterie has an outdoor terrace located on the Mews and inside offers like a warehouse style interior with bare brickwork, exposed ceilings, an open kitchen and fairy lights. The restaurant serves an array of cocktails, charcuterie and small plates. They also do a Bottomless Cheese Fondue Package which sounds amazing. Although, as always we were there for one thing and one thing only; their Sunday Roast.
Their Sunday Service is priced at one course for £18, two for £23 and three for £28. We all opted for the one course, although their starters were never mentioned to us if we did want one and not noted in their menu. The offerings for the Sunday Roast was Cumbrian Beef, Chicken Supreme or a Vegan Joint. Cumbrian Beef was ordered all round and additionally we ordered two sides of cauliflower cheese at £2 each and a side of their pigs in blankets which were £3.
The Cumbrian Beef was served medium with a fair few amount of crispy roast potatoes, roasted carrots, tenderstem broccoli and parsnip puree. Alongside a pretty damn good Yorkshire pudding there was also a stuffing ball which was a great addition. Whilst there was only one piece of meat, I thought the portion size was decent as sometimes you get over-faced with so much on your plate. The beef was cooked to perfection and alongside the meat, the Yorkshire pudding and Roasties were highlights.
As mentioned, we did order two portions of cauliflower cheese between the three of us and it was delicious. As always, Cauliflower Cheese is such an integral part of a Sunday Roast and an absolute must have! We also got a side of Pigs in Blankets which to be honest, we didn’t really need as they were nothing special. The one thing we all noted was that the gravy was notably salty. However, I was still really impressed with the roast overall. There was also enough gravy which probably is because we were up north. I have found a lot of places being so stingy with gravy! It’s one of the best bits!
It seems that The Mews launched their Sunday Roasts in November so it’s a pretty new addition to the Manchester Roast scene. There are a lot of popular places for a Sunday Roast in the city therefore a lot of competition. However, I think The Mews is worth checking out as an up and coming spot. With a few tiny tweaks, they could really be up there with the best!
