Five Places I Loved Eating at in San Francisco
It’s one of my new year’s resolution to actually publish more content about the trips I go on. I’ve got so much to write about on my trip to California last September and it’s about time to get it all down. I thought I would start off with a foodie post. If you know me well, ALL of my trips are planned around where and what we are eating. I thought I would share five places we loved eating in San Francisco. To be honest, we were only in the city for a couple of days so these a pretty touristy. In my opinion, they are still totally worth a visit though.
San Francisco is home to a vibrant foodie scene from the iconic sourdough bread at Boudin Bakery, seafood delights at Fisherman’s Wharf, authentic Mexican cuisine in the mission district and of course, Chinatown; which is actually the birthplace of the fortune cookie! Sadly, the seafood delights are wasted on us as we don’t really eat much seafood. However, seafood lovers will be in awe at the choice seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf. As i said, we were only there for pretty much one full day so didn’t get chance to go to too many places. These are five places we did visit in San Francisco though.
Boudin, sourdough bakery
In terms of food, I don’t think there is anything as iconic as Boudin in San Francisco. Famous for making world class sourdough bread, you can find a restaurant and museum along Fisherman’s Wharf. There is also a few bakeries dotted across the city and most importantly in SFO Airport so you can visit as your last meal before departing.
After my San Francisco trip in 2017, the one place I was desperate to return to was Boudin. Of course, I picked up one of their rustic tomato soups in a Sourdough bread bowl. This is just unreal. The sourdough bread is completely unmatched to anywhere else. Their Clam Chowder Bread bowls are a staple to the menu. Although as I said, I’m not keen on seafood. Stefan went for the French Dip Sandwich and he loved it. We dined at the Fisherman’s Wharf location and sat outside and it was just a lovely meal. An absolute must have in the San Francisco Bay area.
in-n-out burgers
In-N-Out was our first meal as soon as we got to California. I’m well aware that they are dotted everywhere on the West Coast but seen as San Francisco was our first stop on the road trip, In-N-Out was going to be the first meal. Let me tell you, it truly does live up to the hype. Better than Five Guys, Shake Shack, McDonalds, any of them. In-N-Out is located on Fisherman’s Wharf and let me tell you it’s pure chaos in there.
This was our first of three visits to In-N-Out on the trip. My recommendation would be to get a double double burger and animal style fries. You will not be disappointed.
ghirardelli chocolate
The Ghirardelli Chocolate Company is another iconic institution in San Francisco. Home of the most delicious chocolate. Ghirardelli Square sits overlooking the marina. Here you will find the Ghirardelli Chocolate Experience amongst some really cute shops. There’s a few different places selling Ghirardelli Chocolate, I’m not even sure which one we went in. However, we both ordered crazy ice cream Sundaes. Because, why not?! I will say, these are pretty expensive but definitely worth it.
noah’s new york bagels
Although we wasn’t in New York, Stefan was craving a bagel. We actually randomly came across Noah’s New York Bagels on a very early morning walk. I became obsessed with bagels in New York and these ones pretty much lived up to the ones I had there. I got a BLT where as Stefan got a breakfast one with egg. They were both delicious and we enjoyed them on the Embarcadero with a view out to a misty bay before getting the ferry to Alcatraz Island.
tony’s pizzeria
Our final foodie spot was Tony’s Pizzeria. This place came highly recommended. If i remember correctly, this place doesn’t take bookings so you’ve got a wait list to join. When we got there the wait was 90 mins! I guess it just proves how good the pizzas are! However, we were told they did a take out two doors up the street so we opted for that. We went for a Ham and Pineapple (I know, shock) which cost $44 and there was still a 45 minute wait for it. I think if we’d have known that we would’ve just waited at the restaurant.
I was also astounded that one pizza cost $44. However, on pick up we realised why. This pizza was possibly the largest pizza I’ve ever seen. It could have easily fed a small village and we struggled to get in our taxi with it. One slice was probably around 3/4 the size of an average pizza size in the UK. It was a pretty good pizza, it wasn’t the best I’ve had but I certainly would go back. I can see why it’s popular and I’d love to eat in the restaurant next time.
I’m now sooo hungry thinking about all of these delicious places. I’d love to go back just for the food. Let me know down below what sort of other posts about our trip you’d like to see! We managed to do and see so much into two weeks it’s unbelievable!
