Fat Hippo Opens in York
The day I’ve been waiting for has finally arrived. Fat Hippo has arrived in York. The incredible burger chain has opened it’s first restaurant in York City Centre on Low Petergate and I was over the moon to attend the opening event. Fat Hippo have a fair few restaurants now after initially opening in Newcastle, I’m so happy we now have a restaurant closer to home. Fat Hippo is known for their insane burgers, just looking at their Instagram makes me hungry on a daily basis.

A few weeks ago, we headed to York for their opening event. Located just meters away from York Minster, it’s in a prime location with plenty of seating upstairs and downstairs. We started off with some drinks. I went for Summer Slush, however there was no blended ice so it was just a cocktail version. I think I would prefer it as a cocktail though. This included Gin, limoncello and elderflower, it was utterly delicious. Stefan went for an in house Fat Hippo Hillbilly Lager. Their in house beers are brewed with Allendale Brewery and come in the funkiest cans!

It was time for our starter and of course, I went for the Trash Browns with bacon. I dream about this dish and HAVE to order it. I also stand by this being the best dish to have as a takeaway in bed when you are hungover. The Trash Browns are Tater Tots with liquid cheese, cajun onion strings and bacon. Honestly the ultimate combo for me and a must try! They do have some other insane starters which I really need to try sometime such as Wachos (Waffle Fries nachos), Beer battered cheese balls and fried pickles.

Moving on to the mains and we both went for Beef Burgers. There is chicken burgers and wings also available. I got the Swiss Tony and its actually rare that i don’t order the classic cheeseburger but I’m so glad I went for the Swiss Tony. This burger was a double patty, Swiss cheese, smoked bacon, mushrooms, Cajun onion strings and truffle mayo with waffle fries. It was a huge monster of a burger but it was incredible. Stefan went for the Fat Hippo burger which was double patty, American cheese, smoked bacon, chorizo, onion rings and Fat Hippo sauce. On top of that we also order a side of onion rings, they were huge. We probably didn’t need them as there was just so much food, however it was worth it.

The burgers were both really delicious, you could tell the beef was top quality. If you’re looking for an absolutely dirty burger with all the trimmings then this place is for you. They’ve got all the naughty dishes you can think of with every type of potato doused in liquid cheese, onion strings, bacon or all three. My kinda place really. Believe it or not, we didn’t have room for dessert as the burgers were just mega. The desserts did look incredible as they have black vanilla ice cream served with a combination of all sorts from cookie butter to biscoff crumbs. Hopefully I’ll have change to try it soon. The ice cream is limited to the York restaurant and also their other new restaurant in Shoreditch, London.
I’m sure you can see from the photos how insane the burgers are from Fat Hippo. If this is your kind of thing then I urge you to visit Fat Hippo. I also want to mention that this post is obviously very meat heavy with the burgers, bacon etc.. but Fat Hippo do have Vegan options with plant based patty so there is something for everyone.
Have you been to Fat Hippo before?
XOXO
