Last week, my boyfriend and I took a trip down to Leicestershire for a pre-valentines Break. I was kindly gifted an overnight Champneys Springs package for two by Red Letter Days. I’ve never been to a Champneys resort before but I’d heard a lot about the brand and knew it was very well-renowned in the UK. In fact, this was my first proper spa experience and I was very excited for a relaxing and chilled stay. The package from Red Letter Days Included an overnight stay including a three-course dinner, breakfast and buffet lunch. The stay included access to the on-site spa, swimming pool, classes and a few other activities.
Champneys Springs is located in Leicestershire on the outskirts of Burton Upon Trent. After a three hour journey and calling in at IKEA, we arrived mid-afternoon to Champneys Springs. There was a lovely gentleman on the check-in desk who was super helpful and even gave us a tour as it was our first visit. It’s a really big resort and they probably could do with maps! It was super helpful to have a tour otherwise I’m sure we would have got lost wandering. Whilst we got checked-in we were given our Champneys Slippers and Tote Bag which we could keep. In our room was the famous Champneys Robes which would be worn for the majority of the next 24 hours. Our room was quite simple but with all the necessary amenities. Stefan was happy to learn that the TV actually had all the Sky Sports channels.
We had booked in for a late dinner so we could take advantage of checking out the swimming pool and spa before we ate. The 25-metre Swimming Pool also has a pool-side jacuzzi and a separate Hydropool. I was really impressed with the Changing Rooms which was where the heat room, saunas and showers are. This is also where you will find GHD’s and Dyson Hairdryers to use after you are finished in the spa. I’m not going to lie, I thought this was a really nice touch and I was pretty excited to finally try the Dyson Hairdryer. I have to admit they are pretty great! After chilling out in the pool area, where you can relax on some sun loungers – we went to get ready for our three-course dinner.
The Champneys Spa is really a health retreat so I was intrigued to find out what would be on the menu. Food is included in many of the Spa packages at Champneys even if you’re just visiting for the day. To start off, I decided to go for the Butternut Squash Soup and Stefan got the Twice Baked Cheese Souffle, they were both really generous portions and really delicious. On the menu for the main course was a Champney’s Caesar Salad, Cauliflower Steak or a Sticky Beef Stir Fry but we decided to upgrade and go for something from the charcoal grill at an additional cost. I went for the Steak (£8) and Stefan got the rack of lamb (£7) which were both served with Fondant Potato, Curly Kale and Roasted Butternut Squash. It was a really lovely piece of beef and the lamb was also incredible.
To finish off, I went for the fruit salad to be quite healthy but the Chocolate Pudding at an additional £5 was really calling my name. But I resisted! Stefan got the Pear and Ginger Crumble which was served with a caramel crumble. It’s also worth mentioning that drinks aren’t included in the meals and they were slightly pricey. A small glass of wine was £8 but non-alcoholic wine was also available.
Moving on to Breakfast which is served until 10am. I didn’t end up taking any photos but it was a buffet Breakfast with different cereals, fruits and items such as bagels and salmon was available. Cooked breakfasts were available for £4.95 but we decided to stick to the buffet as there was plenty of choices.
Check out was at 11am but we were allowed to use the facilities on site until 4pm. So after breakfast, we got organised and placed all our essentials in our tote bag to take to the spa. In the changing rooms, there are free lockers to used which you are in the spa, we decided to head down in our gym gear and take it from there.
There are many different activities to take part in from over 20 classes which are free per day. You just need to sign up to make sure you have a place. It’s also worth mentioning that there are hundreds of treatments available to book whilst there such as facials but there was still plenty to do if the treatments aren’t something you want to do. We decided to pass on the classes and actually hire bikes. Although it was absolutely freezing, it got the blood pumping. We had a route recommended to us that would take us across the country paths to the next village. I think we were only out for about 45 minutes but it was just good to get out and about and do something a little different.
After coming back from our bike ride, we decided to have a game of tennis. I don’t think you could actually call it a game though as I’m terrible. Most of the balls ended up outside of the court. I spent most of the time running around like a headless chicken. There is an outdoor tennis court and a full-sized football pitch which is used by some pretty big teams from time to time. I also think there’s an indoor Badminton court which you can book depending on whether there are classes going on. I love that there are so many activities which you can do such as Cycling and Tennis which is complimentary for all the gear.
Before we knew it, it was time for lunch. Again, I wasn’t too sure what to expect as it said it was going to be a Three Course Buffet. There was a few different types of meat available and also a chef on hand doing fresh stir-frys. I thought there might have been more choice overall on hot food but I was really impressed by the Stir Frys. For desserts, there was Eton Mess and Crumble pots available – I tried both and they were lovely!
We had time for one last dip in the pool and relaxation in the spa. We wanted to get the most out of our afternoon before leaving so went to try the Hydropool. It was pretty impressive and really nice to just sit back and relax – Especially after our pretty active morning. Although there’s so much to do from the impressive state of the art gym to plenty of sporting activities and classes, it’s still very much a great place to just sit back and relax. You can very much just lay out and read a good book in peace. I can imagine a lot of people visit just for the tranquil environment.
When 4pm rolled around, it was time to use the lovely changing room facilities and head to the reception. There’s actually a dedicated Departure Lounge which I thought was really unique and it made checking out really simple. I’ve not seen anything like this before and is a great difference to dealing with payments at the front desk.
Our trip to Champneys was a lovely pre-valentines break. We left feeling super chilled and relaxed and also enjoyed spending time together doing activities such as tennis and the bike ride which we wouldn’t really do normally. The resort would be perfect for couples who love the outdoors and also keeping healthy. It’s also a lovely place to take some time out and relax but if you were wanting to be active, there’s plenty of options to do so.
Not only would the Champneys Overnight package from Red Letter Days make a great Valentine’s Day present, but it would also be a great present for Mother’s Day which is next month. Spa breaks are a great present, I’m already looking into booking another!
Have you ever been on a spa break? Is this a gift you’d enjoy?
