Sunday Roast Diaries: The Old Liquor Store, York

The Sunday Roast Diaries are back! This week, we’re in my favourite city, York. I was kindly invited to The Old Liquor Store, which is located within the Grade 2 Listed Terry’s Chocolate Factory. I’ve not really explored this neck of the woods too much apart from attending the racecourse around the corner. Just off Bishopthorpe Road, The Old Liquor Store is serving up delicious menus from brunch to expertly crafted dishes in the evening. I knew we had to go when I heard they had a Sunday menu.

The Old Liquor Store has a really cool vibe about it, located below ground level with low intimate lighting. It’s the perfect location for a special occasion, family meal or just a date night. Once seated, we had a look through the Sunday Roast menu, which is served between 12 pm and 4 pm every Sunday.

Whilst the starters sounded utterly delicious, we decided to go straight in with the main courses, where we had a choice of Heather honey & grain mustard glazed Gammon, Sirlion of Beef, Tarragon butter roasted chicken breast and a vegan option of Basil pesto & black garlic baked portobello mushroom. In the end, we both went for the Roast Sirloin of Yorkshire reared beef, which was served with veal bone gravy. I’ve got to say Stefan did have food envy of another table and wished he had gone for the Gammon, but it gives us a good excuse to come back!Sunday Roast Diaries: The Old Liquor Store, York Sunday Roast Diaries: The Old Liquor Store, York Sunday Roast Diaries: The Old Liquor Store, York Sunday Roast Diaries: The Old Liquor Store, York

We were actually sitting by the kitchen, so we were in awe of all the food coming out and basically drooling at the thought of what was coming. And it did not disappoint. The Yorkshire puddings were HUGE! Served with quite a thick cut of Sirloin Beef, but cooked pink and to perfection in my opinion. The dinner was also served with garlic and rosemary roasties and buttered greens. I think my favourite part though, was the cauliflower cheese, which was baked with an Isle of Mull cheddar gratin. The portion size was pretty decent, even  Stefan slightly struggled to eat the lot.

The meal was utterly incredible, and as I said, the Yorkshire puddings were pretty impressive. The price of the roasts is 1 course for £26, 2 courses for 36 and 3 courses for £46. So it’s on the expensive side, but this does reflect in the quality, presentation and location. I would certainly recommend it as a great spot for a special occasion or a treat if you’re looking for 10/10 food and service.

After such a delicious roast, we were both too full for dessert, which truly was sad times are they sounded yummy. We both opted for a cocktail as a lot of the drinks paid homage to the Terry’s Chocolate Factory location. We opted for the Sumptuous Strawberry and the Pyramint. The latter featured Kendal Mint Cake Liquor and Old Liquor Store Clocktower Gin. The Pyramint was also fluorescent green, so it was certainly an interesting choice. Other options on the cocktail menu included Terry’s Chocolate Orange Espresso Martini, which sounded amazing!

We will most certainly be back visiting The Old Liquor Store. Whether that’s for brunch or to revisit the Sunday Roast, as it really was a delicious dish! One not to miss in the York foodie scene.

XOXO
