Sunday Roast Diaries: The Stone Trough Inn, Kirkham
I’m back with another Sunday Roast Diaries! I’ve been meaning to write a post about The Stone Trough Inn for ages. It was way back in 2018 when Stefan and I discovered this spot just by Kirkham Abbey off the A64. We had an afternoon at Castle Howard around Christmas and conveniently came across this great pub and have visited many, many times since. We’ve celebrated birthday’s, anniversary’s and even Mother’s Day here. It’s crazy how I’ve not done a Sunday Roast Diaries post on this place yet!

One of the best things that we loved about Stone Trough was that it actually was carvery but the food was just of such incredibly high quality. Now that Covid has struct, they are just doing regular Sunday Roasts. Last weekend, we went along to see what they were like as we hadn’t visited in such a long time. At the moment (until tomorrow, yay!), we can only dine outside and Stone Trough have built a covered seating area to accommodate the new rules. It’s a great area, especially if the weather is pretty bad – I’d say you’re more inside than out! One thing to note is that booking is essential as this place is very popular. The two photos above are from before they built their outside dining area.

We were quickly seated and given the menus. There is plenty of choice on the menu from traditional Roasts, Fish and Chips to Steak Pie. Everything that we saw looked absolutely delicious and I’m sure we will be back on an evening too. We went for two courses which were £16 but I believe the Roast was £13 by itself. We both opted for mains and desserts and got the Roast Beef Lunch.

The Roast Peppered Rump of British Beef was served pink which I know wouldn’t be for everyone but it was delicious. The Beef here is top quality and you can really taste it. The beef was served garlic and herb roast potatoes, fennel roast carrots and balsamic roast onion. The Roast potatoes were out of this world, cooked to perfection. I would’ve loved another carrot or two but I guess it was for presentation. We also had a dish of red cabbage and a dish of french style peas. The sauce the peas were in was amazing, I’m definitely going to try and replicate myself. We also had a jug of gravy which I massively appreciated as the last couple of places we’ve visited have been short of gravy. Finally, the Yorkshire Pudding. I’ve got to say it wasn’t the best I’ve had at Stone Trough as it wasn’t as light and fluffy as I would expect. However, it was still delicious and I was thoroughly impressed with the Roast overall.

We both went for desserts. I’m not really a starter person but I’ve had the soup here before and it’s been lovely. Given the choice, it’ll always be dessert over starter for me. I went for the Chocolate Brownie served with Vanilla Ice Cream and Stefan got the Sticky Toffee Pudding. I’m a total sucker for anything chocolate and the brownie was lovely although Stefan did say his was a little bit too sickly sweet for him.
If you follow me over on Instagram, you’ll have probably seen Stone Trough Inn featured on my stories over the last couple of years. It’s certainly a firm favourite of ours and we certainly will be back soon. I’m sure we will be booking for when we can go inside and sit in the bar area which is just lovely and traditional in there with open roaring fires. Stay tuned as there are lots more Sunday Roast Diaries posts coming soon!
XOXO

My mouth is watering as I am going through this post. A yummy article
