I spent most of my childhood spending my holidays exploring different Greek Islands. There are actually over 200 inhabited greek islands which have incredibly beautiful beaches, delicious food and a lot of history. It’s actually on my bucket list to go Island hopping around some of the Greek Islands. I certainly want to visit more of Greece and heading back to Rhodes and visiting Santorini are high up on my list. I’ve put together a list of five islands worth considering to visit on your next holiday.
It’s no secret that Rhodes is one of my favourite beach destinations. We stayed near the town of Lindos which is an insanely beautiful place with crystal blue bay and so many cobbled back streets that can be explored. The white washed town is overlooked by the Acropolis on the clifftops. Lindos is one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited. There is a teeny tiny chapel by the waterfront and It’s actually a popular place to get married. From Lindos, we took a day trip to Rhodes Town which is worth visiting to see the old medieval town.
Crete is very much a popular holiday destination amongst brits and was the last Greek Island I visited. In recent years, it’s become very popular with party goers visiting Malia. There is so much to discover in Crete especially in the smaller traditional towns and villages. You can also delve into more ancient culture and visit the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion which is the largest city on the island. Head to the capital for car hire in Heraklion with Rental Centre Crete and explore the island further at your own leisure.
Corfu is probably the least memorable for me as we stayed in a massive all-inclusive resort. When I say massive it was more like a mini village – complete with a train, 12 swimming pools and countless restaurants! It was a pretty amazing resort but it didn’t give us much chance to actually explore Corfu. I’ve actually been watching The Durrells on ITV which shows of the island so beautifully. Corfu Town is worth a visit with countless colourful back streets to explore.
I was pretty young when I visited Kefalonia and actually stayed in the resort Lassi. One of the best things about Kefalonis is the beautiful golden sand beaches which are perfect for relaxing on. I’d recommending taking a trip to the Melissani Cave which you may have seen on Pinterest or Instagram. It really is a must visit destination. You can take a boat tour around and really take in the beauty of the cave.
You will have probably seen all the picture perfect images on Instagram of bloggers holidaying in Santorini. I’ve not visited Santorini before but it’s certainly high on my wanderlust list. Let’s face it, the island is complete vacation goals. If you’re looking for something a little more luxurious, Santorini is home to many high end boutique hotels and gourmet restaurants.
Have you been to any of these Greek Islands? Which one is your favourite?
