Pies & Freakshakes at No.88 Walmgate, York

October 12, 2016

Last week, I was invited down to No.88 Walmgate in York City Centre for a pie tasting evening. Also mentioned was the prospect of tasting some of their Freakshakes which who could turn that down?! No.88 Walmgate is the new restaurant at Hotel Indigo on Walmgate offering traditional Yorkshire dishes with local flavours and ingredients.

I’ve not been to the restaurant before but on this Thursday evening the bar area was bustling. It’s clearly already proving a popular destination with the locals. We had our own private dining area for all the fun of pie tasting to take place. After an introduction to the menu and restaurant by the manager, we were told that the tasting would be done a little different. We were handed a blindfold and told we had to guess what was in each of the four pies. I’ve truly never had a dining experience like this before.

We all took it in turn to be spoon fed each pie starting with the vegetarian option of Pumpkin, Celeriac and Pine Nut Pie. I rarely opt for the Veggie dish but this one was actually my favourite out of all four. We tasted their Turkey, Chorizo and Cranberry Pie which will be introduced for the festive period and their fish option which was topped with sweet potato.

I’ve been desperate to find somewhere in Yorkshire which did Freakshakes. I’d almost given up until I heard about them being served at No.88 Walmgate. I can tell I’m going to be a frequent visitor as they really did not disappoint. First up was their festive offering with Christmas pudding, berries and a whole lot of cream, complete with a glass of egg nog.  I believe this shake will be added to the menu very soon. The second Freakshake is regular on the restaurant’s menu and was decorated with doughnuts, Kit Kats, popcorn and marshmallows. I must admit, I have a total sweet tooth, so I was totally in my element.

No.88 Walmgate is open every day between 12 noon and 10pm and every Friday in October is pie night (otherwise known as #pietober) where diners can get a free glass of wine, craft ale or soft drink when you order a pie. Thanks No.88 Walmgate for a fabulous evening!

WOW! Look at that shake!! It’s times like these I wish I wasn’t lactose intolerant *CRIES* I used to drink gallons of milk and ice cream so know how amazing that would taste. We need more vegan icecreams on the market me thinks.

    Everything looks amazing!
