Little Miss Sunshine The Musical at The Grand Opera House, York
June 5, 2019
One of my all time favourite movies is the Oscar-winning picture Little Miss Sunshine starring Toni Colette, Abigail Breslin and Steve Carrell. I was ever so excited to hear that they had made a musical adaptation and that it was coming to York’s Grand Opera House. Last night, I went along on the train to the press evening with my mum to see it all for myself. It’s been ages since I’ve been to the theatre but I do love a good musical. Also, it was also my first ever visit to York’s Grand Opera House and I have no idea why as there is always so many incredible shows here.
Little Miss Sunshine The Musical comes from Tony Award winners James Lapine and William Finn and follows the classic story of Hoover family’s quest from New Mexico to California for daughter Olive to take place in the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant. Sounds like a pretty simple road trip but you’ve got to factor in the Grandpa who’s a coke addict, the suicidal uncle, a brother who doesn’t speak and parents who are at each other’s throats. Sounds pretty dramatic right?! But it’s actually a really uplifting and hilarious story.
I thought it was amazing how they made it into a musical and it was so great to see one of my favourite movies come along on the stage. The little girl who played Olive was so adorable and absolutely got the well-loved character down to a tee. If you are a massive fan of the movie, I’d highly recommend coming along to the musical.
Little Miss Sunshine has just come from a seven-week run showing in London but is now embarking on a tour across the UK. The musical will be showing at The Grand Opera House in York until Saturday 8th June (this weekend). So you haven’t got too long to grab some tickets which are available online here or from the Grand Opera House directly. However, I do have a really good offer if you are aged between 14-26 and quote “SUNSHINE10” when booking tickets whether that’s over the phone, online or at the box office, you’ll get your tickets for just £10 and a free drink! I don’t really recommend the production to anyone under the age of 14 as just like the movie, there are a few adult themes and saucy language.
As I said before, the musical is now embarking on a UK Tour so you can find out more information on additional dates on the Little Miss Sunshine Musical website here. A massive thank you to The Grand Opera House in York for having my Mum and I last night, we had such a lovely evening and thoroughly enjoyed the musical. I would never have thought about turning Little Miss Sunshine into a musical production but it worked and we loved it.
