I have wanted to visit Windsor for such a long time and after a few days in Brighton and London, we had the perfect opportunity. My Mum and I boarded a train from Paddington and within 40 minutes we arrived in Windsor. During our trip, we were invited to stay at the Macdonald Windsor Hotel which is conveniently located right across from Windsor Castle. If you want to see all about my trip to Windsor Castle, you can read all about it here. Although Windsor is quite a small town, you literally couldn’t be more central than this hotel.
This was actually my first experience in a Macdonald Hotel so I was pretty excited. Check-in was really easy and the ladies on reception were absolutely lovely and so helpful. We were told that we had been upgraded to an executive twin room which we swiftly headed up to check out what awaited us.
The room was a very generous size with twin beds which looked so bloomin’ comfortable. We had just come from two nights in a camping pod which was fun but nothing beats a big snug bed! The pillows were seriously the fluffiest softest things ever. Sleeping on them was a dream. I was just as impressed with the shower which I stupidly didn’t photograph. Does anything really beat a big waterfall drench shower?!
Overall, the room was absolutely lovely and I wouldn’t be able to pick any faults with it. It was, however, the little things that made it really special from the in-shower speakers from the TV, the turndown service and bathrobe & slippers. It was fully equipt with everything you would need, I didn’t want to leave the room.
Before this stay, the one thing I knew about Macdonald Hotels was their Scottish Steak Club as I’d seen advertisements for it when I lived in Birmingham. I actually was under the impression that it would be a typical pub experience and had no idea that the adjoining hotel was so luxurious with incredible rooms. We were lucky enough to get a chance to experience the food in Caley’s Scottish Steakhouse which the restaurant and bar are located towards the back of the hotel on the ground floor.
First up, I have to give our waitress a massive shout out as she was so friendly and attentive. She showed up to our seats and went over the menu with us. It was one of those menus where you spend forever mulling over what to order and changing your mind every two seconds. Did I want steak? or Fish and Chips? In the end, I went for the Breaded Chicken Burger served on a Brioche bun. Whilst the burger was lovely, I did regret not ordering the steak – after all, we were in a Steakhouse! My Mum went for the Steak and Ale pie served with chunky chips. I did steal a bit from her for the purpose of this review – The beef was all crumbly and delicious.
I couldn’t resist ordering dessert and the winner of the most random dessert goes to…. me! Don’t judge me as it actually tasted pretty great. When ordering ice cream or a sorbet, you could mix and match your toppings and sauce. I chose Blackcurrant Sorbet with chocolate sprinkles and hot chocolate sauce drizzled on top. A genius combination I would say! My Mum went for the New York Cheesecake also served with sorbet.
After a dreamy night’s sleep, I reluctantly had to get up for breakfast and to head out for our day at Windsor Castle. Breakfast was once again served at Caley’s Steakhouse where we were given a menu to choose from. Not only was there cooked to order options, there was also cereals, fruits and pastries around a huge buffet table. As neither of us eats eggs, we got the full English with a few amendments. The service once again was brilliant with drink top ups and additional slices of toast. It was a lovely breakfast but I was a little sad that there were no coco pops!
The Macdonald Windsor Hotel was a great all-rounder with beautiful rooms and excellent food in a great location. Not only is the hotel perfect for visitors of Windsor exploring the residence of the Royal Family, it’s pretty close to Heathrow Airport for jet setters. It was such a great central hub for us on our little trip to Windsor. We hope to be back soon! A massive thank you to the Macdonald Windsor Hotel for having us, if you would like to find out more about the hotel and their current offers, click here.
