Travel: Five Things to do in London at Christmas

December 6, 2015

Last week, I spent a couple of days in London and the city was looking especially festive. London really does pull out all the stops when it comes to Christmas so I thought I would do a mini guide of some of my favourite places to visit in London at Christmas.

Winter Wonderland

One of the main reasons for my visit to London was to take my Mum to Winter Wonderland as she had never been! Winter Wonderland takes over Hyde Park at the end of November and there are so many attractions, rides, food and things to see. It’s a really big place so I’d recommend going for at least three hours and it’s such a good night out with some really fun themed bars. If you’re looking for something totally unique, there is even an Ice Kingdom complete with an IceBar, Circus Shows and a giant wheel which gives you great views over the city.

Southbank Christmas Market

I do love a good Christmas Market and Southbank is one of my favourite areas. I didn’t manage to visit the market this year but in previous years the Southbank Christmas Market is a really chilled atmosphere with some insanely delicious food stands. There’s just something about wandering by the river with the festive music playing that makes this such a must-visit.

Christmas Lights, Windows and Tree’s

There are some beautiful Christmas Lights, Windows and Tree’s around London and I have so many recommendations. Oxford Street and Regent Street always have brilliant Christmas lights, I’m sure you will have seen them on Instagram. Carnaby Street have a different theme every year and always deck the street out with really fun lights. Covent Garden is such also lovely place to visit at Christmas, not only is there a lovely giant Christmas tree, there are pretty lights in the piazza and a massive reindeer.

For any Disney fans, there is an amazing Disney Christmas Tree in St. Pancras Station made from all the different soft toy characters. If you get the chance to visit, it’s definitely worth seeing as it’s incredible. (There’s also some lovely shops in St.Pancras) This year we also decided to visit Claridges and see their big Christmas tree which is designed by different fashion designers. This year’s tree was designed by Christopher Bailey for Burberry and it’s completely unique with golden umbrella’s. I haven’t seen anything like it before. When I was taking a couple of photo’s, the one and only Christian Louboutin walked past us!

Finally, there are some spectacular Festive windows in the department stores. My favourite has to be Harrods, they always go above and beyond. In the past, there has been Disney Princesses adorned in designer frocks and the “Harrods Express” with a huge train in the window. Selfridges have really good windows too although I’m not really feeling this year’s which is to do with space but if you’re passing it would be rude not to take a peek.

Get Festive at the Theatre

This year saw the launch of ELF: The Musical starring Kimberly Walsh at the Dominion Theatre. Elf is the ultimate Christmas movie so I can only imagine the Musical will put you in the festive spirit. We didn’t have enough time to go to the theatre unfortunately but hopefully it’ll be on next year!

Ice Skating

I’m not the biggest fan of Ice Skating as I complete suck at it. I tried it once in Birmingham and it’s definitely not for me, although I would consider lessons. There are some really great Ice Skating rinks dotted around London from the Tower of London to Westfield Shopping Centre. My favourite is at Somerset House, it’s such a lovely location and if you fancy a tipple there’s a little Fortnum and Mason bar.

Have you  been to London at Christmas or Winter Wonderland? What do you like to do in December to get you in the festive spirit?

XOXO
